Washers

A washer is used with a bolt and in a sense makes the head of the bolt bigger; it is flat and round with a hole in the middle.   The washer can be used with a bolt for several different reasons.   One of these is to allow the bolt to withstand more force without pulling through the hole.   Sometimes it is to act as a spacer and effectively shorten the bolt.
