Output
My apologies to fans of English-With-Doug for missing the post yesterday. Today will have two posts to get things back on track. Today’s word is output. Output is something produced. This word is a noun because it is an idea, but it refers to very tangible things. The outputs of a production line might be cars, washing machines or even plastic bottles. These are good things; the more output there is from a production line the better it is. However when we are talking about nuclear reactors there are good and bad outputs. The electricity is good but the radioactive waste is bad if it is not properly stored.
Sometimes this word can refer to an individual as well. If a writer increases the number of books he writes each year we might say he increased his productivity or we might say she increased her output.
We added ten percent more people to the production line but increased output by twenty percent.
The outputs of a gas generator are electricity, water vapour, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
A printer outputs paper unless it is jammed.
