Metal Defects
If you buy something and there is something wrong with it we say that it has a defect. When steel is delivered to a factory there can be a number of problems. Here is a short list of things that could be wrong with the metal.
Dents. Dents are marks on steel caused by a large amount of force hitting a small area. An example would be if you hit a body panel on a car with a hammer.
Rust. This is one of the most common. Over time moisture in the air will cause most metals to rust and turn a brownish orange colour.
Necking. This happens during a stamping process where metal becomes stretched too thin.
Burrs. When cutting metal sometimes a rough edge forms. These rough edges are called burrs. They need to be smoothed out with a grinder or some other tool as they may be unsafe or cause damage to other surfaces they come into contact with.
