Conjunctions
Conjunctions in English are words that join other words or phrases. There are three types but I will only discuss the most common ones today. These are known as coordinating conjunctions. You may be wondering what the picture that goes with this article has to do with the topic. Well you are about to find out! There is a trick for remembering the most common coordinating conjunctions and it is the word FANBOYS. The picture portrays some men (or boys using the term loosely) who are fans of a sports team.

But
Or
Yet
So
Before I give some examples, remember that these are joining words. They bring together words and phrases.
I do not ride horses, for they are dangerous. (For has similar meaning here to since or because. In fact you could substitute either word and it would mean basically the same thing).
He was hot and she was cold.
Dario is not slow nor is he lazy. (Joins two untrue things).
Diamond Appliance Company had a thousand applications but only fifty job openings.
You can work in payables or receivables. (when talking about options).
Sales increased by seventy-six percent yet the company was still losing money. (Expresses unexpected things. Similar to but).
Ingrid set her alarm half an hour earlier so she would not be late for work. (For showing consequences)
