Interjections
Interjections are one of the easiest parts of speech to understand. They are simply words that are used to express emotion. Here are some examples.
Ow! “That hurt” said George after he hit his thumb with a hammer.
Hurray, we set a new production record.
Aw, I wish it wasn’t snowing.
Hey! You are stepping on my foot. (If the person stepping on your foot is more than 200 kgs)
Hey, you are stepping on my foot. (If the person stepping on your foot is less than 60 kgs)
Just a final note on rules governing the use of interjections. You will notice that the last two examples are almost identical. This is to illustrate the point that if strong emotion is being conveyed, the interjection is followed by an exclamation mark and then a new sentence is started. If mild emotion is expressed then a comma follows and the rest of the sentence continues.
