Adverbs

It is Grammar Friday.   I am working through the parts of speech on Fridays and today we are talking about adverbs.   Normally when I give a grammar definition I try to keep it as short and simple as possible.   Today I am going to quote the Khan Academy YouTube channel because their definition is short and simple.

“An adverb modifies anything that is not a noun.”  - Khan Academy

This is because adjectives (talked about last Friday) modify nouns so adverbs do everything else, and that is a lot!

Sample sentences:

George ran quickly back to his work station.  (“Quickly” is the adverb and it modifies “ran”)

Henry Ford thoughtfully considered how to build a better car.  (“thoughtfully” is the adverb because it tells us how Henry Ford “considered”)

The old lights burned dimly in the warehouse.  (“Dimly” is the adverb modifying “burned”)

You will notice in all these examples that the adverbs end with the letters, “ly”.   That is because most adverbs do.   In the future examples may be given that do not.   As always….If you have any questions leave a comment or send me an email at doug@English-With-Doug.com.
