Shelves and Racks

If we did not have these then we would have to spread everything out on the floor!   These words are almost interchangeable.   In day to day speech people will of use both words for the same thing.

Shelf.  A horizontal slab of wood or metal for storing inventory.  Singular is “shelf” and plural is “shelves”.   Example: Howard needed the forklift to put the skid on the top shelf.  When we speak of a whole system of shelves in a warehouse they are normally referred to as “racking”.

Rack.  A support system for holding shelves.   Example: It took three days to install the new racking system.
