Pronouns
There are many different types of pronouns and I will deal with them in the most basic sense here. Pronouns take the place of nouns. Let me illustrate with some sentences.
Bruce dropped his phone in the water. Bruce started to curse.
Starting both sentences with “Bruce” is unnecessary. This is where pronouns come in. They help us by standing in for other words.
Bruce dropped his phone in the water. He started to curse.
The word “he” is the pronoun. Because of the close proximity of Bruce in the previous sentence we know who is being referred to.
